New additions need clear intended use
A patio is sized around seating and circulation. A side path is planned for comfortable passage through gates and around equipment. A shed or spa pad follows the supported item’s exact information.
These surfaces may all be added after original construction, but that does not make their preparation or loading interchangeable.
Existing surfaces should be diagnosed
Builder-installed or later concrete should not be judged by age alone. A stable slab with a crack is different from several panels that have moved, or a driveway that sends water toward the garage.
Removal is useful where elevations or supporting conditions need correction. Local repair has a role where damage is isolated and movement is not driving the defect.
Plan the meeting lines
New work beside existing concrete will differ in colour and weathering. A defined joint acknowledges that difference and can create a clean construction boundary.
At the house, meeting lines are also elevation controls. Door thresholds, porches, foundation exposure and window wells limit how a new surface can be positioned.
